Drysdale Rotary Club is delighted to announce that it is running the annual Frank Mountford Literacy Competition, formerly run by Queenscliffe Rotary Club. This year we’re excited to be focusing on primary schools in Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Leopold, St Leonards and Portarlington.


Competition details:


  • Open to Year 5 and Year 6 students

  • $100 first prize and $50 second prize for each grade, plus at least one prize to each participating school

  • 500 word limit


  • Story topics:

  • My favourite book and why you should read it

  • The eagle sat on the highest branch of the tree and….

  • Sport for children is important because….

  • Music for children is important because….

All entries must include:


  • Student’s name

  • School

  • Teacher’s name

  • Year level

  • Teacher’s best contact email



We are looking for original pieces of work only. Winners will be selected based on originality, creativity, plot and structure. Judging will be led by Rotarian Dr June Alexander (an author with a PhD in Creative Writing).


At least one prize will be awarded to a student from each participating school. Overall winners will be selected from all participating schools, and total prize value will equal $500.


We hope you can encourage your students to get involved and share the attached information with your teachers and in your school newsletter over the next few weeks. We’re looking forward to seeing some outstanding pieces of writing.
